Overview

Salik charges are time-sensitive and route-sensitive. Start with the official rate table, identify every gantry on the route and confirm whether the journey falls in a peak, off-peak or toll-free period.

What matters

Do not budget from an old flat-rate article. Check the 2026 VAT change, exceptional Sunday schedules and any rental-car administration fee. Keep account and plate data current.

Practical checklist

  • 01
    Map every gantry

Count crossings in both directions, not just the nearest gate.

  • 02
    Check the time band

Classify each crossing as peak, off-peak or toll-free.

  • 03
    Add VAT

Use Salik’s current displayed charge after the June 2026 change.

  • 04
    Verify account details

Match plate, tag, phone and vehicle ownership records.

  • 05
    Review statements

Check early journeys and keep receipts for disputed or business trips.

Our method

We reviewed Salik’s official variable-pricing page, toll-gate directory, 2026 VAT announcement and FAQ. We avoided relying on older flat-rate summaries and flagged event or holiday exceptions that require a live check.

How Salik works

Salik is Dubai’s free-flow road toll system. Gantries identify a registered tag or vehicle as it passes, so drivers do not stop at a booth. The charge is deducted from the linked account. A Salik account should have the correct plate details and sufficient balance; a newly acquired vehicle should not be assumed to inherit the previous owner’s setup.

Variable toll periods

Salik introduced variable toll pricing in 2025. The official rate page lists weekday and Saturday peak periods of 6am-10am and 4pm-8pm, with lower off-peak pricing between those windows and from 8pm to 1am. The period from 1am to 6am is toll-free. Sunday uses an off-peak rate from 6am to 1am, except on public holidays, special occasions or major events where a different schedule may apply.

From 1 June 2026, Salik applies 5% VAT to toll tariffs and tag activation fees. Because rates, VAT display and exceptional schedules can change, check the official variable-toll page or Salik app before calculating a recurring commute.

Registering a tag and vehicle

Buy an approved Salik tag, create or sign in to an account, and enter the requested tag, mobile, plate and registration details exactly. Follow the placement instructions for the windscreen. If a plate, ownership, phone number or vehicle changes, update the account promptly rather than relying on recognition alone.

Keep the confirmation and review the first transactions. A missing deduction does not necessarily mean a free trip; an unmatched passage can be posted later. The Salik FAQ explains grace periods and violations for unregistered vehicles and insufficient funds. Check the current rule before driving because deadlines and penalties are high-impact details.

Planning toll costs

Map the number of gantries in each direction and the time each will be crossed. Two routes with similar distance can have different toll totals, fuel use and travel time. Avoiding a toll is not automatically cheaper if the alternative adds a long detour, parking difficulty or delay.

For regular commuting, compare one representative workweek. Include the 2026 VAT amount shown by Salik and allow for occasional peak journeys. Business drivers should download statements and confirm how toll and VAT records are handled for expenses.

Rental cars and sold vehicles

Rental companies normally pass tolls to the renter and may add an administration fee under the rental agreement. Ask for the per-crossing treatment before leaving the counter. When selling a car, remove or deactivate the vehicle in line with Salik instructions and retain evidence. Do not leave an active payment relationship attached to a vehicle you no longer control.
