Overview
Dubai taxi fares depend on pickup method, time, distance, waiting and tolls. Road hails start from AED 5 or AED 5.50, authorised e-hail bookings use AED 9, AED 10 or AED 13 bands, and Dubai airport taxis start from AED 20 for a normal vehicle.
What matters
The flag fall is not the final fare. Confirm the meter, vehicle type and pickup channel. Airport taxis should be taken from the official queue, Salik is passed to the passenger, and a route that avoids tolls can still cost more through time and distance.
Practical checklist
- 01Choose the service type
Distinguish a regular taxi from a limousine or private ride-hailing car.
- 02Use a safe pickup
Hail in a safe zone or use an official taxi rank or authorised app.
- 03Check the meter
Confirm that the taxi meter begins operating when the trip starts.
- 04Discuss toll preferences
Tell the driver at the start if you prefer to avoid Salik and understand the possible detour.
- 05Keep the receipt
Save the app trip or receipt for expenses, lost property and fare queries.
- 06Record the vehicle
Note the plate or taxi number when no app record is available.
Our method
We used RTA's current fare schedule for road, e-hail, airport and Port Rashid starting amounts and Dubai Taxi Company's current service page for booking channels and contact routes. We avoided treating an app estimate as a fixed total and separated regular taxis from private or limousine products.
How Dubai taxi fares work in 2026
Dubai taxi prices combine a starting fare with metered distance, waiting and any applicable road toll or inter-emirate charge. The starting fare changes with the pickup method, time and location. A taxi hailed from the road is priced differently from a taxi booked through an authorised e-hail app, and airport taxis have their own starting amount.
The meter is the record of the trip. Confirm that it starts when the journey begins and ask for a receipt at the end. RTA states that the journey is free if the meter is not operating or if the taxi breaks down during the trip.
Road-hail starting fares
RTA's current fare page lists a starting fare of AED 5 for a regular road pickup from 6am to 10pm and AED 5.50 from 10pm to 6am. These are flag-fall amounts, not minimum quotes for an entire journey. The total rises with the metered distance and waiting time.
Hail only where it is safe for the vehicle to stop. At malls, hotels, stations and major attractions, follow the signed taxi queue rather than trying to stop a cab in a restricted lane.
E-hail booking fares
Authorised e-hail bookings use time-sensitive starting fares. RTA's published schedule uses AED 9, AED 10 or AED 13 depending on the day and demand period. The live app should display the relevant estimate or booking information before confirmation.
Dubai Taxi Company lists Bolt, S'hail and Careem among its taxi booking channels. Choose a regular taxi product if that is what you intend to compare; limousine, premium or private ride-hailing products follow different prices. A higher app fare is not necessarily an unexplained surge—it can reflect the official e-hail flag fall for the time band.
Dubai airport taxi fares
RTA lists an AED 20 starting fare for a normal taxi from Dubai airports and AED 25 for a van. Airport taxis are available from the official queue, and Dubai Taxi Company states that advance booking is not required because airport taxis operate around the clock.
Use the organised rank and follow staff directions. Do not accept an unsolicited ride from someone outside the official queue. If travelling with a large family, significant luggage, a wheelchair or a child-seat requirement, ask the queue organiser for the suitable vehicle before boarding.
Port Rashid and other pickup points
RTA lists a starting fare of AED 25 from Port Rashid. Exclusive venue queues and special services can have different arrangements, so confirm the vehicle type before entering. A hotel limousine may look similar to a taxi but does not necessarily use the regular RTA taxi tariff.
Salik, waiting and route choices
RTA states that Salik toll-gate charges are billed to the passenger. Tell the driver at the beginning if you want to avoid toll roads, then compare the likely detour. Avoiding one toll can cost more in metered distance and waiting if traffic is heavy.
The fare can also increase while the vehicle waits in congestion or at a requested stop. For a time-critical airport or appointment journey, the fastest route can be more valuable than the lowest theoretical toll count. Use a navigation app as a planning aid, but do not assume its estimate is a fixed taxi quote.
Payment and receipts
Confirm the payment methods displayed in the vehicle or booking app before the end of the trip. Keep a receipt for expenses, lost-property reports or fare queries. A useful receipt should connect the time, vehicle or trip reference and paid amount.
If an in-car payment terminal fails, ask the driver for the official alternative rather than transferring money to an unrelated personal account without documentation. For an app booking, preserve the trip record and route.
Safety, lost property and complaints
Check the roof colour and taxi markings, then note the vehicle or plate number if travelling without an app record. Share the trip with someone when travelling late or alone. Use the seat belt and ask the driver to stop safely if you need to exit.
Dubai Taxi Company lists 800 88088 for its customer centre, while RTA lists 800 90 90. For lost property or a fare concern, report the approximate pickup time, origin, destination, payment method, vehicle details and item description as soon as possible.
Estimating a trip accurately
Start with the correct flag fall: road, app, airport or port. Then account for likely distance, traffic, waiting and Salik. Compare like with like—a regular taxi is not the same product as a private car or limousine. The app estimate is useful, but the operating meter and official tariff govern the completed taxi trip.
