Overview
Dubai Metro is the simplest way to cross many high-traffic parts of the city without parking. Plan around the line, interchange, zone count and final train—not just the closest station. Current RTA information should be checked on the travel day because holiday and event schedules can change.
What matters
The fare is based on zones crossed. The last useful train can be earlier than the network closing time. Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 are served by named Red Line stations, while Terminal 2 requires an onward connection. Every passenger needs a valid card or ticket.
Practical checklist
- 01Check the terminal
Confirm Terminal 1, 2 or 3 before choosing an airport route.
- 02Plan in the RTA app
Check the live route, interchange and last practical departure.
- 03Load enough balance
Keep enough nol value for the full zone-based fare.
- 04Use the right cabin
Follow signs for regular, Gold Class and women-and-children cabins.
- 05Tap out
Use the same card at entry and exit so the fare is calculated correctly.
Our method
We compared the current RTA timetable, fare table and nol product information, prioritising official operating rules over third-party summaries. We separated standard published hours from holiday exceptions and avoided treating a network closing time as a guaranteed final departure.
Dubai Metro hours in 2026
RTA lists Metro operating hours as 5am to midnight Monday to Thursday, 5am to 1am the following day on Friday, 5am to midnight Saturday and 8am to midnight Sunday. These are network hours, not a promise that every last train departs at closing time. Check the RTA journey planner before a late trip, especially on public holidays or event days.
The Red Line links Centrepoint with branches toward Expo 2020 and Life Pharmacy. The Green Line runs between e& and Creek. Union and BurJuman connect the two lines; Sobha Realty and DMCC connect with Dubai Tram. For Dubai International Airport, the Red Line serves Airport Terminal 1 and Airport Terminal 3 stations. Allow time for the walk, security and airline check-in, and confirm that your baggage is manageable on public transport.
How Metro fares work
Dubai is divided into seven public-transport zones. On a Silver or Personal nol card, RTA lists AED 3 for one zone, AED 5 for two adjacent zones and AED 7.50 for more than two zones. Gold Class costs AED 6, AED 10 and AED 15 respectively. A Red Ticket costs more per journey. Your final fare depends on the zones crossed, not the number of stops.
Tap in and tap out with the same card. Keep enough balance for the maximum expected fare. RTA permits up to three transfers within one journey when the next service is boarded within 30 minutes; the maximum total journey time is 180 minutes.
Choosing a nol card
Silver is the practical reusable choice for most residents and repeat visitors. RTA lists a purchase price of AED 25, including AED 19 e-purse value. Gold uses the same network but opens Gold Class cabins at double the regular fare. A Personal card can carry concessions for eligible users. A Red Ticket can suit a small number of trips but has higher per-trip fares and limited flexibility.
Children aged five and under travel free according to RTA. Eligibility and documentation rules for other concessions can change, so verify them with RTA before relying on a discount.
Airport and luggage planning
Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 have named Red Line stations. Terminal 2 does not have a directly named Metro station, so use the RTA planner to compare a feeder bus, taxi or transfer. Check your terminal first: an Emirates itinerary often uses Terminal 3, but airlines and individual flights can operate elsewhere.
Avoid the final train if a missed connection would risk a flight. Friday and Sunday hours differ from the rest of the week, and special schedules may apply. Keep aisles and doors clear, follow cabin signs and avoid oversized luggage during crowded commuting periods.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not tap two people through with one nol card; each passenger needs a valid travel product. Check that you are in the correct cabin because Gold Class and women-and-children cabins are marked. Eating, drinking and sleeping in prohibited areas can attract fines. Most importantly, tap out even when a gate is open so the correct fare is calculated.
