Overview

Dubai’s Click and Travel service moves passport control from a fixed booth to a secure mobile device carried by an immigration officer. Officially launched on 7 September 2026 after phased trials, it uses biometrics, facial recognition and electronic-passport reading and is reported to complete a standard transaction in approximately 12 to 15 seconds.

What matters

Click and Travel is officer-operated and does not require a passenger app or paid booking. It changes the passport-control channel, not the legal entry requirements or the rest of the airport journey. Availability on a specific trip depends on operational deployment and staff direction.

Practical checklist

  • 01
    Check travel documents

    Confirm passport validity, visa or residence status and airline document rules before travelling.

  • 02
    Allow normal airport time

    Use the airline’s recommended arrival time; the 12–15-second figure covers only the passport-control transaction.

  • 03
    Carry original documents

    Keep the required physical passport and supporting documents accessible even when biometrics are used.

  • 04
    Follow staff direction

    Use the counter, gate or mobile process assigned by authorised airport personnel.

  • 05
    Keep family passports organised

    Have each traveller’s document ready so an officer can process the group efficiently.

  • 06
    Request assistance separately

    Arrange airline or airport accessibility support in advance when needed; the mobile service does not replace it.

  • 07
    Continue to the next checkpoint

    After passport control, follow signs for security on departure or baggage and customs on arrival.

  • 08
    Reject payment requests

    Passport-control processing is not a paid add-on; do not share payment details with an unofficial contact.

  • 09
    Recheck live requirements

    Review GDRFA, Dubai Airports and airline guidance before the journey because operating procedures can change.

Our method

Time Out Dubai was used only to identify fresh interest in Click and Travel. We checked Archive 971’s published articles and existing drafts and found no dedicated guide to the service. On 18 September 2026, we independently reviewed contemporaneous UAE reporting that attributes the launch details to GDRFA Dubai, then cross-checked the launch date, eligibility, technology, pilot history, trial volume and reported processing time against a separate legal-news summary of Gulf News coverage. We distinguish the passport-control transaction from the complete airport journey and do not assume guaranteed availability for every passenger. The featured image’s Wikimedia Commons record explicitly identifies an aerial view of Dubai International Airport, credits Umair Shaikh, dates the photograph to 17 December 2013 and confirms a CC BY-SA 2.0 licence reviewed against the original Flickr upload.

Dubai Click and Travel: confirmed facts at a glance

Dubai’s General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs launched Click and Travel on 7 September 2026. The service lets passport-control officers process passengers with handheld devices instead of requiring every transaction to take place at a fixed immigration counter.

| Service detail | Confirmed position |
| --- | --- |
| Official launch | 7 September 2026 |
| Function | Mobile passport-control processing by an officer |
| Reported transaction time | Approximately 12–15 seconds |
| Traveller categories | UAE nationals, UAE residents, GCC nationals and visitors |
| Travel direction | Arrivals and departures |
| Technology | Biometrics, facial recognition, electronic-passport reading and automated checks |
| Trial result | 31,373 passengers processed |
| First pilot | Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport in October 2025 |
| Wider trial | Expanded in May 2026 across Dubai airport terminals and traveller categories |

The 12–15-second figure describes the reported passport-control transaction. It is not a promise that an entire airport journey, queue or connection will take that long.

What Click and Travel is

Click and Travel is an officer-operated mobile immigration service. A passport officer carries a secure device to the passenger, verifies identity and completes the relevant arrival or departure procedure without relying on a conventional fixed booth.

The device can use biometric verification, facial recognition and electronic-passport reading. It connects to official databases through a secure network and supports automated checks before the officer completes the transaction.

This is not a passenger app, an online booking system or a self-service immigration lane. Travellers should not download an unofficial application, pay a third party or expect to activate the service before reaching the airport. Deployment is managed by airport passport-control officers.

Who can use the service

Published launch information says Click and Travel is available to UAE nationals, UAE residents, GCC nationals and visitors for both arrivals and departures. That broad eligibility does not mean every passenger will be processed on a mobile device on every trip.

The service is designed to give officers flexibility to move processing to the passenger, particularly when fixed counters are less practical or when passenger flow needs to be managed. Travellers should follow instructions from airport and immigration staff and use the channel they are directed to.

Passport validity, visa requirements, entry permission and other immigration conditions still apply. Mobile processing changes where and how the passport-control transaction can happen; it does not create a new immigration status or override an entry decision.

How the mobile passport check works

The exact sequence can vary by traveller and travel direction, but the published process has four core elements:

1. A passport-control officer approaches with an authorised handheld device.
2. The device reads an electronic passport or performs biometric verification.
3. Automated checks and official database access support the officer’s review.
4. The officer completes the arrival or departure passport-control transaction.

On departure, passengers continue to the next required airport stage, including security screening. On arrival, they continue towards baggage reclaim and customs as applicable. Airline, security, baggage and customs procedures remain separate.

What the 12–15-second figure means

GDRFA’s launch information, reported by UAE media, says each Click and Travel transaction takes approximately 12 to 15 seconds. During the trial, 31,373 passengers were processed.

That measurement should not be used as a total airport-processing estimate. A traveller may still spend time walking between areas, waiting for an officer, checking in, dropping baggage, clearing security, collecting bags or completing customs requirements. Extra identity or immigration checks can also take longer.

The sensible interpretation is that the mobile passport-control transaction itself can be completed quickly when the passenger and documents are ready and the standard checks clear successfully.

From Terminal 3 pilot to official launch

The first trial began at Dubai International Airport’s Terminal 3 in October 2025 and initially focused on families. A second phase started in May 2026, expanding the trial to Dubai airport terminals and different traveller categories.

After the summer trial, the service was officially launched on 7 September 2026. Published reports say it was developed with Dubai Airports, Emirates and other passenger-processing stakeholders.

The phased rollout matters because older reports may describe a narrower family pilot. The current launch position is broader, but operational use can still vary by terminal, passenger flow and officer direction.

Families and People of Determination

One practical benefit is that the officer can bring the device to a passenger. Published launch reporting specifically identifies children and People of Determination as groups who may benefit when approaching a fixed counter is inconvenient.

Families should still keep each traveller’s passport and required travel documents accessible. Assistance requests should be made through the airline, airport or official support channels; Click and Travel does not replace booked accessibility services, airline escorts or terminal mobility support.

What Click and Travel does not replace

The service concerns passport control. It does not replace:

- airline check-in, ticketing or boarding-pass requirements;
- baggage drop, baggage screening or baggage collection;
- airport security screening;
- customs declarations or customs inspection;
- visa, residency or passport-validity requirements;
- airline rules on travel documents, transit or boarding;
- additional checks requested by an authorised officer.

Passengers should therefore plan their journey using the airline’s recommended arrival time. A faster immigration transaction is not a reason to arrive late for a flight.

UAE-specific considerations

Dubai operates several automated and officer-led passenger-processing options. Click and Travel should be understood as another official channel, not as a replacement for every Smart Gate or staffed counter.

Carry the physical passport or travel document required for the journey even when biometrics are used. Do not assume a digital copy will be sufficient. Visitors must continue to meet the entry conditions attached to their nationality, visa or permit.

Only cooperate with uniformed or clearly identified authorised personnel in the controlled airport area. An official passport-control officer will not ask a traveller to pay for the mobile transaction or to share banking credentials through a link.

Because airport procedures can change, check the airline, Dubai Airports and GDRFA for live requirements before travel. Follow the signs and staff instructions presented at the terminal rather than attempting to seek out the mobile service.

Practical traveller checklist

Before leaving for the airport, confirm passport validity, visa or residence status, airline document rules and any transit requirements. Complete online check-in if the airline permits it, but keep original travel documents available.

At the terminal, allow the airline’s recommended time, keep passports organised for every family member and follow the processing channel assigned by staff. If an officer uses Click and Travel, present the requested document and complete the biometric check as instructed.

After mobile passport control, continue to the next required stage. Departing passengers should proceed to security and their gate; arriving passengers should follow signs for baggage reclaim and customs.

Bottom line

Click and Travel changes the location of passport control by giving Dubai immigration officers a secure mobile processing device. It can complete a standard passport-control transaction in approximately 12 to 15 seconds and is available across the main traveller categories reported at launch.

Its value is flexibility: officers can take the process to passengers, assist families and People of Determination, and manage flows without depending on a fixed counter in every situation. Travellers should still treat it as one part of the airport journey and allow time for every other required check.
